Secrets of the Old Farmhouse - Part XII

Lighting a candle to dispel the darkness, Uncle Jake sat quietly on an old chair in the cellar and began speaking. "If there is a spirit here with us, I need you to make yourself known; Uncle Levi, if you are here, please make some kind of sound so we know that it's you."

As soon as he uttered Levi's name the cellar became icy cold and a mason jar filled with preserved fruit fell off the shelf and smashed on the floor, startling Jill and Seth.

"Levi," Uncle Jake continued on calmly, "I know from what I've been told that a lot of bad things happened when you lived here.  I'm sure you're sorry for all the trouble you've given our family and we forgive you, but you can't stay here any longer because you are frightening Jill; I release you and I am ordering you to leave now and go to the light."

At first Uncle Jake's statement was met with silence, then a great rush of air blew past them, extinguishing the candle and moving up the stairs, rattling the cellar door and leaving the front door of the house wide open as it departed.

  1. Spooky! If that all it takes to make him go to the "light"....the family is very fortunate.

    1. I agree, let's hope it really worked. Maybe what Uncle Levi was needing to be acknowledged and forgiven before he could move on.

    1. I hope he was paying close attention, Mimi, and that he regretted his past actions both when he was living, and bothering Catherine in the cellar after he passed. I don't wish anyone to be a lost soul.

    1. Yes, and it would have been far more scary to be sitting there when this occurred. About the time the jar went flying off the shelf I would have been flying back up the stairs never to return!!

    1. Well, he wasn't a very nice guy living or dead, so his departure wasn't likely to be warm and fuzzy either. He had to cause a bit more commotion, but let's hope that's the end of it and of him at the old farmhouse.

  5. so..... that simple? (there is a part of me thinking, 'ok, a little simple. for a guy of his...strong opinions he went kinda easy') the mark of a good story, extrapolating the characters beyond the narrative... lol

    1. I agree, Levi apparently departed without a struggle, but is he really gone for good??

    1. I suspect it won't be as simple as Uncle Jake hopes. I am fine with spirits in the house, but not nasty ones.

  9. This could be seen as a very scary story, but I think that there might be another message here, that of the power of forgiveness.
I rushed to your story to see what was happening this week!

    1. I am glad that I've been successful at generating a little curiosity about what happens next! :-) I think you've caught on to the overall theme of the whole series... that love and forgiveness have the power to change things. I'm not sure we've seen the last of Uncle Levi, I feel an interesting twist coming in the weeks ahead! ;-)

    1. I have felt that rush of air before, Rory Bore, in a draft-free room that was much warmer than the air that hit me, and it gave me goosebumps! Uncle Jake has good intentions, but will that be enough?

  12. Levi is gone but I wonder if there are more secrets and more spirits living in the old farmhouse. Perhaps Catherine can come out of hiding how and fill the house with love.

    1. In old places where so much history has taken place there is always more to discover! It is a good place to live, but there are still some lingering problems to be dealt with. ;-)
