Our Home On The Range

Oh, give me a home where the rattlesnakes roam,

Where the coyotes and roadrunners play,

Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,

(just the creaking of the pump jack in the backyard)

And the skies are not cloudy all day... except during dust storms.

But our home on the range has its amazing moments too!

  1. Home is where the heart is. And yours is filled with a Papa Bear and some furkids.

    1. I am happy to report that this is the first one I have seen this close to our house, but I know they are out there!

  4. Really!? You get to see snakes like that? Massachusetts supposed to have one of the largest populations of rattlesnake... but you could have fooled me

    1. We live in rattlesnake country, but by the grace of God I never see them. Of course I don't go walking where they are likely to hang out. I DO NOT like snakes!

  5. You know I was singing your post to myself! Lovely photos to complement the words. Can you really hear and see a pump jack in your backyard or is that writer's priviledge?

    1. Hahaha, earworm, Val! :-) Yes, we can hear the creaking of the pump jack that sits on the back of our property. It was preceded by a month of a small derrick parked back there, complete with 24/7 drilling activity and floodlights! The company was very courteous though and paid us for the inconvenience. That enabled us to put a new roof on the house. Sadly, we only own surface rights to the land, so we don't reap the profits of the oil under it. I wish we did! :-)

  6. I'll take all of it - but the deadly snake! ha. Even the dust storm is rather beautiful in it's own way. The coyotes I already got, and boy were they making an awful riot last night. I had to shut the bedroom window.

    1. While I do not like stances even one bit, I have a soft spot for coyotes, they are so maligned, and for certain can decimate a chicken coop or rabbit hutch. But in many years they appear so gaunt from the lack of adequate food here and I wonder where they find water. This year they are thriving due to all the rain which has resulted in lots of vegetation and plentiful plump rabbits. I love the sound of little coyote pups yipping in the dens at night... but definitely not howling all night, that would make me nuts!!
