Stalled

Wes told LuAnn that their 18th Wedding Anniversary trip was a surprise, and he wouldn't tell her where they were going or exactly when they would leave until the Friday morning he woke her early and said "pack your things for a casual trip, we leave in an hour".

Surprises were totally out of character for Wes and their relationship had been at a stalemate for some time, so LuAnn was excited as she hurriedly threw her clothes and cosmetics in a suitcase and tossed it in the car.  "We have a long drive ahead of us" was Wes's response when LuAnn asked why they were departing while it was still dark out.

They arrived at Caddo Lake on the Texas-Louisiana border late in the afternoon, just in time to take a rental boat out for a tour of the huge lake, which was more swamp and bayou than open water and felt like something out of prehistoric times with all the tangled cypress roots, overhanging Spanish moss, and alligators sunning themselves on the grassy banks.

LuAnn was loving this strange place far away from civilization and cell phone service, and they roamed the waterways until nearly sunset, that is until the boat motor choked and stalled out and Wes's efforts to restart it met with no result.

The evening grew dark and the small boat light reflected off the eyes of  large alligators swimming nearby; there was a scuffle and a large splash, and then the boat motor kicked in and Wes quietly headed back to shore.

    1. Thanks! If a person who doesn't usually do surprises suddenly does, it would make me question!

    1. Thanks Clark, Papa Bear enjoyed it too! Perhaps many a husband has fantasized something similar from time to time, but of course that's also true of wives. :-)

    1. Thanks! I don't think she was in need of shelter by then end of the story, but he was likely to find himself sheltered behind bars once people figured things out, if they ever did! Papa Bear saw a 14 foot ROUS following behind his boat at Caddo Lake once!

    1. He loved it! He shared it with his boss, then texted me to ask if I would like to go to Caddo Lake instead of Colorado on our upcoming vacation! Noooooo!!! :-) He grew up near there as a child and his grandfather had a cabin on Caddo. He helped him catch fish there to sell.

    1. She really should have been more suspicious of his motives based on his track record so far. Sometimes we let our emotions overrule the danger signs our heads see when it comes to relationships.
