So They Thought

He thought he had all his ducks in a row.  He'd been secretly planning their tenth anniversary for weeks -  a bouquet of her favorite flowers, dinner at the elegant Sky Lounge high above the city, reservations at the Hilton, and an eternity ring with ten sparkling diamonds tucked in his pocket.
He came home early and found them there together.

She thought she had all her ducks in a row.  She had been so careful to keep the relationship a secret these past months -  his number under a false identity on her cell phone, a secret email account, gifting him with the same cologne her husband wore, shared lunches at the busy farmer's market in a small town miles away, and romantic encounters carefully timed to fall within her husband's 8 AM - 6 PM daily work commute.  Then he came home early and found them there together.

    1. So true, Mimi, no one ever wants to be in this situation. Nothing good comes of cheating in a relationship, by it's very nature it is destructive.

  4. Shocking and sad. One of those surprises neither probably enjoyed. Great use of the cue-ducks in a row.

    1. I'm sure her husband was in total shock, not the anniversary he was anticipating, Val. Very sad indeed.

  5. It sure sounded like she had all her ducks in a row, but one got out of line in the timing! She wasn't very smart having him at her house. Sad for him to learn of her affair that way. The truth usually becomes known..sooner of later! Great story.

    1. I think that such risky behavior tends to the "excitement" of extramarital affairs, Jessie. Sadly, as you note, the truth usually comes out, and this was a horribly sad way for that to happen.

  6. Try as one might, I don't believe one can ever have all your ducks in a row when dealing in deception.
    Sad, but well done!

    1. I agree with you, she only thought she had all the bases covered, but she miscalculated his return time. In a way I'm glad she did, otherwise their anniversary celebration would have been a total farce, which wasn't fair to him either. Sad all the way around.

    1. Definite "oops", and a most awkward situation for "Brad", but he totally deserved getting caught with his pants down.

  8. Wow. I will never understand people who bring their cheating to their marital home. Sick. Great story!

    1. I agree Jenn, it takes cheating to another level when you don't respect your partner enough to even keep home a sacred space. Plenty of other places to meet up. Maybe part of her wanted to get caught so she could end the deception.

  9. Uh oh! I am thinking of another word - that rhymes with Duck!! The utter betrayal though. I just don't understand those kinds of people who can lie to the ones they are supposed to love.

    1. Yup, that pretty much sums up the situation Rory Bore! I can only guess how shattering it was to come home anticipating a night of celebrating your anniversary and be confronted with this instead. I don't get cheating either, it means you don't respect your partner enough to turn away from temptation. Funny how easily some people can look their partner in the face and yet their life is a lie.

  10. Sad story too often told. People can be dumber than ducks.

    1. Isn't that the truth, Patricia! And what do you get if you take up with someone in such a manner? You get someone who cheats on their partner, and will cheat on you too. Not much of a prize in the long run.
