A to Z Reasons to Smile - "Z"

Each day this month I've been sharing a list of things corresponding to the alphabet letter of the day that encourage and uplift me, the little things that make smile. I hope you'll join me, and maybe add some of your own in the comments!

"Z" Things That Make Me Smile...

Zebra - I'm starting off my final post for this year's A to Z Challenge with the classic "Z is for Zebra.".  The adorable zebra above resides at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center near Glen Rose, Texas, along with a host of other wild creatures, many of them exotic.  We spent a weekend at a cabin on the Paluxy River a few years back, and our drive through the wildlife center was definitely the highlight of the trip.  We purchased feed for the animals along with all the other visitors, and despite the necessary warnings not to feed them directly from our hands, the animals were well aware that the vehicles passing through contained people with food to share, and they thought nothing of walking up and sticking their faces in the truck window for a hand out.  It was a blast!  This gorgeous guy seemed to be checking out his long eyelashes in our mirror before moving in for some treats.

Zodiac - Whether you believe in astrology or not, it's fun to read the traits of your sun sign and see if you think it accurately describes your personality.  I am a pretty close match to my sign of Aquarius, and a strange lot we Aquarians are.  I never met one I didn't like!

Zucchini - My grandmother grew zucchini squash in her garden, as did my mother, and I've done so too. They thrive in our summer sunshine here in Texas as long as they get plenty of water.  I love zucchini in all forms... batter fried, saluted, steamed, roasted, in casseroles, and even in zucchini bread... delicious!  They can easily be grown to immense proportions, but truthfully harvesting them when they are small makes for better eating.

Zoos - While I'd much rather observe animals in their natural environments than in a zoo, I still enjoy going to good ones and I think they serve a purpose in educating and advocating for the animals who live there, as well as helping to prevent extinction of animals that have become rare. The best zoos have habitats as close to natural as possible, and I swear that I could spend hours watching giant polar bears swimming so gracefully in their icy pool on the other side of the glass window!

Zero - We tend to think of this number as meaning nothing, but it can be looked at in a much more positive frame too - having zero reasons to be unkind, zero excuses for not doing your best, zero tolerance for cruelty, zero waste, zero trash left behind when visiting natural places, and especially zero things you find wrong with yourself!

Zigzag - Yes, I know this name is associated with rolling papers and so do you, but I'm thinking it in more of a decorative frame of mind... like the ric rac ribbon trim that once frequently adorned home-sewn items.  Zigzag is not only a pretty design pattern, it's also a fun way to walk with a friend, and sometimes an unintentional manner of walking if you've had too much to drink!

Zoom - Ahhh the joys of the zoom feature on iPhones and iPad when it comes to old eyes or even just tired eyes wanting to see the text they've received, or read the latest E-Books they've downloaded.  Also great for zooming in on a GPS map or a satellite photo of your house!!

Ziploc - What a clever little invention Ziploc bags are!  More uses than I have the energy to list here including food storage, to make ice packs, and to tote cosmetics in a suitcase.  The benefit is being sure that you've successfully sealed the bag, as opposed to early Baggies which were press-n-seal or required the use of a twist tie and weren't leak proof at all.  Word of advice here... do not attempt to go through airport security with a small Ziploc bag of beach sand in your carry-on tote.  Who knew it would create such a commotion with security regarding what that baggie actually contained! :=)

Zorro - If you are my age, you probably fondly remember Zorro as being a masked swordsman on a beautiful black stallion on Saturday morning television who was one of the original caped crusaders taking on the bad guys, however zorro is also the Spanish word for fox. :-)

Zillion - A number or amount so huge that it cannot be counted.  There is one thing I'm quite certain there's a zillion of - that would be the blessings in our lives, the reasons to be thankful!  You can make a daily gratitude list from now until you pass to the spirit world, and if you're truly seeing how many blessings you have, you will never run out of something to add to the list!  No matter how challenging and difficult and even painful it can be it times, all in all life is GOOD, be thankful! <3
