Cover Story

Stan had it worked out to perfection.  On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays he would head straight from work to the motel, gym bag in hand.  An hour or so later, having enjoyed the pleasure of keeping company with the other woman in his life, he would open his gym bag, pull on a pair of dirty gym shorts and a t-shirt, rub his arms and calves liberally with Bengay ointment, and head home. Once home, reeking of sweaty gym clothes and Bengay, he would call out a greeting to his wife and head down the hall to shower.  She was glad to forgo a hug until he'd cleaned up for supper.

Stan's cover story worked well, bolstered by a couple of his friends who were willing to support his tales with exchanged bits of conversation about their shared work-out routines whenever his wife was present.  The affair went on for months.  As far as Stan was concerned, no one was getting hurt by his extra-curricular activities, and his wife was none the wiser... or so he thought.

Then came the day that Stan left the motel to find his wife standing beside his car, arms crossed, and a look of rage mixed with devastation on her face.  Reaching for his gym bag, she pulled a tiny device from a zipper pocket on the side and handed it to him.  GPS tracker... busted... game over.

    1. That's a million dollar question, Brenda, why do they somehow view themselves as so clever that no one will ever guess that something is amiss, particularly the wife who knows them so well.

  4. ooooh, how sneaky of him... what a cover.... amazing really because Im sure its happening or happened.... gotta love gps, but there had to be some reason to be suspicious in the first place, so good for her for being on to him!

    1. Actually, it has happened, Zoe, based on a true story, however he didn't get caught, at least not that time. I heard that he confessed years later. I have to admit it was a clever plan.

  5. They never learn, do they? She will find out sooner or later. If not, it's because it's more convenient for her not to know.

    1. You and Zoe are right about this Mimi, spouses have some feeling or indication when cheating is going on. Sometimes they choose to pursue it, sometimes they feel safer ignoring it until it hits them in the face. Sad, regardless. Why do we betray the people we claim to love?

    1. Thank you Romi, this plot line is so common place that it really didn't need much fleshing out to make it believable and interesting. It also serves as a valid warning, never, ever thing you are above getting caught!

  7. Of course the question is "Why was she suspicious in the first place?". Almost certainly he wasn't paying her enough attention when at home, not the excessive use of the gym. She was a loser too, she should have made up for his absence at the "Gym".

  8. I am so glad he was "caught". The dirty dog. I can't abide unfaithfulness. I hope she takes him for all he is worth. (OOOOh an emotional button). Relationships are complicated and need constant caring. Great story.
