Sunshine

Sammi was having the saddest summer ever.  Her mother was in the Army and had been sent overseas.  She had no choice but to leave Sammi in the care of her grandparents at their farm.  Sammi loved her Grandma and Grandpa; they took good care of her and did their best to make her feel at home.  But she missed her own house in the city and her friends, and most of all she missed her Mama.  They got to visit often on the computer, blowing kisses at each other's faces on the screen, but it wasn't the same as having her there to snuggle up with at night.

It broke her grandparents heart to see their beloved Sammi so sad.  She willingly helped Grandma with washing the dishes and baking, and Grandpa with feeding the chickens and gathering eggs, but more often than not, when the chores were done they would find her sitting out in the yard looking so very forlorn.

Grandpa had an idea that he thought  just might help.  He whispered his secret to Sammi's Grandma, then headed off on a special errand in his truck.  He returned about an hour later and headed out to the backyard with a wiggling bundle of pure energy in his arms.  One tiny yip was enough to turn Sammi's head in their direction. Within seconds she was up and running across the yard toward the little pup she would name Sunshine, who was destined to become the best friend she ever had.

  1. Critters have gotten me through many feelings and situations. Dogs indeed make best friends. Good "tale".

    1. Thank you Annie, I know there is more than one dog who holds a very special place in your memories and heart! I often think our animals sense our fears and sorrows better than humans ever could.

    1. I thought so too, Sandee, what better way to help a little girl find a reason to laugh again than with a playful pup?

  3. The best sunshine is in the smile of a very small child, or the closeness of a pet.

    1. Agreed Mimi, if you can find the magic way to bring the smile back to this little girl's face, the world will indeed be right again. Her puppy will be there to offer loves and snuggles while her mommy is away!

  5. Which came first, the story or the photos? They matched perfectly!

    1. For this one the story came first Christine, and I was able to find just the photos I wanted for it on Google images, my go-to source for most of my posts. I know the story is right when I can match it to the perfect illustration. Often I write the story around a photo, but with this one I knew what I wanted to say and how I wanted the pictures to reflect that!

  6. There is something about a furry friend that can make the world brighter and and not so lonely.

    1. You know we both think alike on that, Patricia, how much less our lives would be were it not for the love and affection of our furkids!

  8. Well darn it. Most women say they want another baby. I've always been the one wanting another puppy. If I'd had my wishes granted, I'd be known as the crazy old woman with all the dogs. And YOU'LL be known as the woman with all the cats, and a great husband. Sounds pretty good, doesn't it.

    1. I think Beax would be delighted to have a new little furpup to entertain him, Lotta Joy! :-) It is only thru the greater wisdom and restraint of Papa Bear that I am not already a crazy cat lady with thirty cats! I want to rescue every one I see at the shelter! I am thankful though that we are able to provide good homes for the ones we have now, where they are very loved and very spoiled! Pets just make all the difference, they make a house feel like home, don't they?! :-)

    1. I think it would make her so much happier to have this new furry friend to play with, Joseph. Dogs and cats are wonderful companions, and puppies have so much energy that they can't help but make you laugh at their silly antics!
