The Escape Key

Santos sat at her desk at the call center, feeling like the walls of her tiny cubicle were closing in. She'd been dealing with customer complaints eight hours a day for the last five years, and she was way beyond weary of it. Once again her impossible-to-please supervisor stood behind her glowering, waiting for her to slip up or fail to satisfy an unhappy customer, so that he could berate her and tell her what a lousy customer service rep she was.

The next caller was a woman who was angry because the Super Power Energy Drink she had purchased from their website had failed to provide enough energy for her to win a 20-hour dance marathon. Something inside of Santos snapped; she told the customer to "get over it" and yanked off the headset of her phone. Extending her index finger over the keyboard, she made a silent wish and pressed down firmly on the escape key, and in a whoosh of air she found herself sitting on the beach of a beautiful tropical island with an ice-cold umbrella drink in her hand.

  2. Good take on the prompt. If you are taking orders, I'd like one that would send me fishing on a lake up north!

    1. Amen to that Sandee, but maybe it only works when you reach the point of desperation. If I knew for certain, I would have tried it years ago too! :-)

  4. Funny, the thought I had when reading this was, "I have no doubt there is someone on this planet who has called one of the energy drink makers to complain that she didn't have enough energy after drinking one."
An escape key would be awesome, though. :)

    1. That's exactly the thought I had as I wrote it, Christine, the ridiculous things people call to complain about! An escape key, wow, those keyboards would be a hot-ticket item, wouldn't they? :-)

  8. Very inventive. I think I would like that particular escape key but only if I could come back to my real life when I wanted...it's a good life y'know.

    1. You have a wonderful point there, Patricia, when I contemplated life on that wonderful tropical island, I immediately began to consider all that I would be leaving behind, and realized that I would end up wanting to take my whole life with me, with the exception of the daily office job. If I am imagining, I can imagine myself a writer with books on the best-seller list and sufficient income coming in! Imagination is a wonderful thing! :-)
