For Round 12 of ABC Wednesday I'm presenting a vocabulary word we don't often hear in everyday conversation, accompanied by a short story or verse. This week is all about the letter C.
can·tan·ker·ous
Adjective: bad-tempered, argumentative, and uncooperative
Synonyms: quarrelsome - contentions - peevish - shrewish
Carlos the cantankerous cat
Would bite at the drop of a hat
When folks tried to pet him
He'd turn round and get 'em
He relished his role as a brat

Stop by ABC Wednesday, link up your own C-word post, and read what other folks had to say!

Funny you should use this - I just used this word in my commment for ABCWednesday. I love the word, love how it sounds and clunks out of my mouth! Great choice and post!
ReplyDeleteI love the way this word sounds too Meryl, it definitely fits the meaning! :-)
Deletecat and cantankerous ARE synonymous
ReplyDeleteROG, ABC Wednesday team
LOL, Roger... I've known some cats where that applies, but mine - of course - are all angels... for the most part! :-)
DeleteGreat choice for ABC Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteThe word cantankerous just feels cranky, like your poem.
Yes it does, I think so too... thanks!
DeleteI wouldn't use that wrd with my circle.. They could get cantankerous :D
ReplyDeletePhenoMenon, ABCW Team
I love to toss in a "big word" now and then just to hear someone grumble about big words. I'm cantankerous like that!:-)
DeleteLOVE this! lol
ReplyDeleteLeslie
abcw team
Glad you endjoyed it, Leslie!
DeleteOh that expression is priceless, as is the poem. Too cute!
ReplyDeleteWell suited to the word, isn't he! They could put this in the dictionary next to cantankerous as an illustration. You can just see the cat has an "attitude"! :-)
Deletevery cute limeirck
ReplyDeleteVerification makes it really hard to comment, takes a few times sometimes. you'd probably get more comments if you turned it off.
Thanks, Zongrik! I DESPISE word verification and wasn't aware that my Word Press ID utilized one. I think I've resolved that situation now. If you see any more word verifications appearing when commenting on my blog, please let me know!!
DeleteActually cantankerous is a word I hear frequently, usually in reference to me. :)
ReplyDeleteAn Arkies Musings
LOL, that could easily be applied to me at times too, I can admittedly be a bit ornery... but it's fun! :-)
DeleteI love the sound of this word, very catchy.
ReplyDeleteCOINS
Rose, ABC Wednesday Team
I like words that sound like their definition, that give that same feel, and this is surely one of those!
DeleteHope this isn't a tale based on one of your fur kids pictured on the side of your blog!
ReplyDeleteOh no, my four furkids are all precious and perfect, and so very well behaved... just like me! Hehehe Thankfully, there are no biters in the bunch though, I'm not fond of cats that bite, had one once. Usually cats that bite have been teased or mistreated when they were young, and developed biting as a defense mechanism toward people, can't say as I blame them!
DeleteI believe all cats have a cantankerous but cute side. Love the poem.
ReplyDeleteAnn
You might be right, Ann, in the sense that they are so very independent by nature and will have things their way regardless. In that they are so different from dogs, but I love it!
