Weeds

This is an awesome poetry book!

In Weeds, her first published book of poetry, McGuffy Ann Morris comes to us as a clear new voice that isn't afraid to speak the truth about life, and what she has experienced and observed. Throughout this collection of fifty well-written poems, one feels the pull of powerful emotions. McGuffy Ann's life clearly hasn't been an easy journey, and yet the incredible resilience of her spirit shines through the jagged edges of anger, hurt, resentment and regret.

This is not a book of over-worked, embellished verses, with vague references that leave us struggling to comprehend their meaning.  Ms. Morris writes with a simple clarity and precision that leaves no doubt about her thoughts and feelings in poems that run the gamut of subject and emotion.  She speaks plainly in language we can all understand, as is true in these lines from the poem "Broken"...

Nothing and no one can fix what is broken.
 Secrets and apologies echo unspoken.

One definition of a weed, as noted on the back cover of the book, is "a plant not valued where it is growing".  Reading the poems in Weeds, one realizes that the author understands what it is like to be unacknowledged; the wisdom she has gained through her own experiences and the things she has witnessed makes her a powerful a voice for those who are unable to speak, and helps all of us to see the world more clearly.

I highly recommend Weeds by McGuffy Ann Morris.  The poems found on the pages of this book will leave you thinking, and hopefully talking about things that have been hidden too long.  Reading this book is an experience you won't want to miss!

    1. This is a powerfully good read, Louise, and covers a wide range of topics. I smiled when I first saw the cover of "Weeds", it brought your book "The Dandelion Spirit" to mind. You both share the same undertanding of dandelion tenacity. I have always found them to be bright and beautiful, just as both of you are!

    1. Thank you so much Fi! This is the first review I've ever written and I wanted it to reflect what I felt as an everyday, typical reader. I am not an avid poetry reader, it can't be just words strung together that are meaningful only to the writer, it has to make me think about something or feel something and in language I can understand. McGuffy Ann's book is all of that and more!

    1. The same is true of me Wayne, most contemporary poetry leaves me going "ugh", the poems are either forced to rhyme or too vague for me to find meaning in. This book is different, the poems carry messages and say something worth saying. Give Weeds a try, I'm betting you'll agree!
