Target Practice for Two

It's Six Word Saturday time... here's the way my day began...

Early Morning Target Shooting - Great Fun!

Easy backboard - had the lumberyard cut a sheet of inexpensive 4x8 board
into 2x4 pieces that can be screwed onto fence pickets for easy replacement.

Paper torso targets from the sporting goods store.
Ready, aim, fire!

My first three shots fired - not bad at all!
(My very funny daughter asked if I was standing three feet away :-)

By the time we were finished, about 80 rounds later, this guy's midsection was covered in red marks-the-spot sticker dots, and a few errant off the grid ones as well, but I forgot to take a picture.  We also blasted a few filled water bottles, they make great targets. I blew the cap off one, while the bottle remained standing!

Papa Bear ended up liking my new Smith &Wesson 9mm automatic so much that he sold the old one he's had for 15 years and bought one identical to mine.  His and hers, isn't that sweet?  Told him I was going to paint a peace sign on mine! He is off at gun school now, doing his concealed weapons permit recertification, I can't wait to see his target and how well he did!

We're now talking about buying a .22 Smith & Wesson pistol so we can do more evening target shooting with less expensive ammo, but tomorrow I want to take his AR-15 out back and have some fun.  Shooting that powerful baby is a crazy experience!  It will have to be after my appointment to get my nails and pedicure done though, I'm still a girl after all! :-)

    1. I was pleased, my physical coordination is generally poor, so it amazes me that this is something I can do fairly well. My kids are surprised, my husband is delighted, and I'm having a great time with him learning something new!

    1. Thanks Kristi! I'm still working on stance, grip, and of course keeping my eye open! I certainly surprised Papa Bear with these shots, and we had a $10 bet on who could hit the bullseye first. Of course I had the first opportunity, and he quickly followed suit! :-)

    1. Thank You! We are loving that we finally have a place of our own to target practice, we don't have to drive somewhere, and we don't have to pay. This is right out in the back half of our little piece of acreage! Before I wasn't very excited about learning to shoot because I didn't get to do it often enough to get good at it. Now I can! Look out Papa Bear, I am going to be a contender! :-)

    1. He he, thanks Jo-Anne! Bit by bit I am getting a feel for it and Papa Bear isn't so leary of being in front of me when I have a gun in my hand. Gun safety is a big part of the learning process here in Texas, you do it correctly and safely, or you don't do it at all! That's another reason we won't be having shooting parties out here, even though friends have asked.. alcohol and firearms don't mix!! We don't need that kind of liability. People don't realize the distance bullets can travel. I could easily hit people on the highway or neighboring farms, but we don't shoot in that direction! I think I am liking guns a lot too! :-))

    1. I can't think of a more fun way to spend some mother-daughter time, Elsie. I'm eager for the next time my daughter comes to visit, she became a handgun owner long before I did. My son is a great marksman and is looking forward to the chance to try out his skills against ol' mom, now if I could just get them here from Tennessee!

    1. LOL Ken, definitely romantic! :-) Maybe I should have practiced this skill in my last marriage, might have "encouraged" my ex to get his act together!

  7. That is neat!! Sounds like you are good at it too!! LOL with your last comment with getting hair and nails done :) Honestly, never shot a gun, not sure if I want to, but do respect those who do :)

    have a great Sunday!

    1. Hi Betty! That's one of the few girly things I enjoy.. pretty nails and toes, purple being my favorite polish color, of course! I'd never held or shot a gun in over fifty years of living, so I understand how you think/feel about it. I probably never would have if it wasn't something John enjoyed so much and was eager for me to try. I found out that target shooting (NOT killing animals) is challenging and fun and I can do it well enough to make it fun for him too.

  8. There she goes again, shooting off bottle caps in the middle of Texas! Does this mean that the next time I come to Austin I need to learn to shoot? ;-)

    1. I don't know Bozo, it might, I'm told you are not really a proper card-carrying Texan until you learn to shoot a gun! :-) And it would be a pretty fun bit of info to spring on any potential future partners! :-)

  9. You rock!! This is awesome! I like shooting too, but haven't really done it much in my lifetime. You, my friend, are a force to be reckoned with when you're packin'! :) I loved the ending about getting your nails done. Just love it!

    1. Thanks Carrie! That's not a word that's often used to describe me, so I'm smiling as I read this! I hadn't done any shooting until I met up with John four years ago, and even then we only did it a couple times because the only place we had to shoot was a long drive to a ranch south of here. So I didn't have a chance to do it enough to become a real fan. Now that we can walk out the back door and across the yard to shoot we'll be doing it pretty often I'm sure, and it realy is fun! The reality is that acrylic nails prove to be far more durable than my own, and I just love looking at the bright colors on my wrinkly old hands! One day I saw a lady in at least her 70's getting her fingers and toes done in bright neon orange, I had to admire her spirit!

    1. A new facet of me that no no one expected... even me, Louise! :-) I am all about contradictions, I love them! Yes, girls can shoot, even with bright purple fingernails and matching toes! :-))

    2. But there will be no pink guns in the house, that's just toooo girly for my tastes. They are after all handguns not toys, which doesn't mean I might not embroider daisies on the padded case! :-)

  13. That's one hell of an aim you have! I hope I never cross you! (if I hadn't already by allowing MaMTC to post what she did on my blog) Sorry for that!

Anyways, I keep saying I should get some guns and you keep making me want to even more!

    1. Never fear Workingdan, if I was going to off someone it would have been done long ago. I do name my targets and that's provides all the venting/amusement I need to get over whoever/whatever is bugging me. As for MaMTC, I think she is an attention whore, first she overtook Bozo's blog and then yours. She feeds on the attention this provides. To me visiting blogs is like visiting people's homes... you mind your manners and if they ask you to leave (which Bozo did) you do! While MaMTC says no hard feelings, it's obvious she does have some issues. I'm not buying the "bad day" excuse for her behavior, and no, I don't feel I owe her an apology. End of story.

Speaking of getting more guns, on Sunday we purchased a Beretta 22 pistol, and I love it! Designed in Italy but Made in America... I like that!

    2. I think she commented on my blog more times than all the other readers combined...from the last 2 posts! lol I know what you mean. I just try to keep it peaceful and prevent making enemies. If letting her come to my blog and roast me is what it takes then so be it!

I'm not sure it's gonna stop her from taking over my comments section though!

As for what happened on Bozo's blog, I never should have referenced it. I wasn't even there for that post but I know Bozo was quite upset about it and I was just looking out for my faithful fans.

My silly and harmless nonsense hasn't allowed that particular incident to just die(or maybe it's MaMTC nonsense) and again, I'm sorry!

    1. I can well imagine what strange images this conjures up in your mind, Ranting Monkey, I have to agree it's a pretty wild combination! Oh dear, does this mean I'm slowly morphing? NEVER!! :-) I will paint a peace sign on my gun for good measure. LOL

  15. Good shot! I have a target on the side of my refrigerator. I put a not on it, "we call the morgue, not 911."

    1. Love it, Tee! That seems to be the sentiment in these parts too! Do guns deter criminals? I don't know, but they do make one feel like the playing field is a bit more level. I don't ever want to be a victim again in my life!
