Five Things I Like About Me

Hey folks, it's Five on Friday time, and might I say Thank God It's Friday! Whew, it's been a long week! Now if weekends were also five days long, that would be awesome! At any rate, it's time for a little list-making exercise to wrap up the week...

One of the things I've noticed about myself and fellow-bloggers, well maybe with the exception of The Ranting Monkey, is a great hesitance to say anything good about ourselves, to talk about what we do right and what we are that's good. I'm not talking about obnoxious arrogance, just an awareness of things we can rightly take pride in. For some unknown reason self-esteem is perceived as a character flaw when really it should be taught in school and at home from the earliest years on. On that note, my theme for this week is...

The five traits I most like about my best friend:   (who in my case is also my husband :-)
  1. He is trustworthy - a new experience for me - a husband who can be trusted, imagine that!
  2. He is responsible - has been employed by the same business for 31 years, he keeps the bills paid, the house repaired, and takes care of whatever else needs to be taken care of
  3. He is loving - VERY! Also compassionate and a great caretaker!
  4. He has a wonderful sense of humor - he makes me laugh all the time, he hasn't lost his childhood sense of playfulness
  5. He stands up for his beliefs - he is not afraid to say what he thinks and to address issues when needed.  (It was really hard for me to choose just five - I could easily name ten more, if I could clone him I could sell copies and retire wealthy!  I feel very blessed, and sometimes unworthy.)
The five traits I most like about me:
  1. I am caring and compassionate, I can relate to people who have struggled in their lives because I've been there too. I try to think about how I would feel if I was in their situation, rather than judging them. Often we don't know the whole story, we haven't walked that mile in their shoes.
  2. I am reasonably intelligent and can understand most things. I am not afraid to ask questions if I don't understand or if I desire more information. I am not afraid to learn new things, or have my beliefs challenged.
  3. I enjoy finding little ways to encourage others and to brighten their day, even if it's just a smile or a friendly word. Little things can make a big difference!
  4. I am fairly good at expressing myself thru writing, or at least I like to think I am. I'm certainly good at stringing lots and lots of rambling words together! :-) Brevity is not my strong point.
  5. I stand up for my beliefs and am not afraid to state my opinions. I speak out when I feel that someone is being treated wrong.   (In addition to these five, I also like that I love bright, cheerful colors, and that I tend to be a bit "unconventional" - being labeled crazy can be very freeing!)
That's enough about me and my life... at least for today! Feel free to join me in making lists for your own best friend and yourself, or in posting any five-item list that suits your mood today!  If you do, please a link in the comments below so we can see what you've had to say!

  1. I can't wait to see your answers! What a great idea for a challenge. I may bookmark this and do it sometime next week. I have to get ready for my brother's visit so I'm doing anything on my blog today unless I'm all done with my stuff around the house =)

Have a relaxing weekend, you deserve it!

    2. Aww, thanks Monkey! Inquisitive... a much nicer word for damn snoopy! :-) Maybe that's why I love cats so much... curiosity incarnate! In this I definitely approve of you breaking the rules. :-) I don't see myself as brave... just determinded. Loved your list, it made me smile!

    3. I knew that line was gonna get your attention, and funny as it is, it's true... you think highly of yourself and you aren't afraid to say so! We need more of that in the world... as long as it comes with marshmallow hearts! :-)

  3. Fun! I've been checking back now and then to see when your update was complete. Love both your lists and I just can't tell you how happy I am that you both found each other... ummmm... you and your Papa Bear, rather than you and The Ranting Monkey, (although him too lol).

Even though I've only been reading your blog for a short time - I feel like I've already see all of these qualities in you.

This post was a nice idea and thank you for sharing :)

    1. Thank you for coming back to read my completed post, Bozo! As I responded to your comment on The Monkey's blog, there was a time in my life that I honestly couldn't have come up with one thing I liked about myself or my life, it was that bad. Now I realize that I had allowed someone else to paint that picture of me, or rather to paint over my picture of myself. I found my way back to who I am, and I'm pretty much ok with me most days now! Thank you for your sweet compliments!

  4. I have popped over from a ranting monkey and not the one in my spare room who likes to play peek a boo with my granddaughter but the one here in blogland......now I like the 5 things you have mentioned about both you and your hubby............

Now I will do a post and list my 5 things that I like about me if I can think of 5 things at this point I can only think of 3 things but those 3 things came straight to my mind if that counts for anything and if it doesn't well too bad............

    1. Hi Jo-Anne, welcome to my blog! Yes, being able to come up with three things quickly is a very good sign I think, it means you know you have some good qualities!! :-) You'd be surprised how many people can't even think of one. What has our world done to us? When people like themselves more, they tend to be kinder and more forgiving towards other people too, so then it's a win-win situation!

  5. Hi there Josie. I’m trying to get to know you, and this is the third post I’ve read. I like what I read here, though I do think that self-esteem is over rated in this modern world. Still, the things you tell of yourself, and your best friend sound really good.

    1. Thank you Shimon! I do think it's important that we realize our own value and worth in the world, but I think it's just as important that we recognize the value and worth of all others... including those who are different from ourselves and have different ways of living and believing. Real love is seeing the value in all creation and realizing that we are all connected.
